UEFA Euro Championship Competitions:

The intra-continental UEFA European Championships were first held in 1960, the 16th edition. The first elite pan-European football competition played in France under the name European Nations’ Cup, featuring 17 teams. In the Paris final, the Soviet Union defeated Yugoslavia 2-1 to win the championship. The UEFA Euros have been won by ten different nations. Spain and Germany, have each won the competition three times. They have been the most successful teams in the quadrennial competition. Spain won the European football championship in 1964, 2008, and 2012. West Germany won the title in 1972, 1980, and 1996. Additionally, only Spain has emerged victorious in the championship tournament twice in a row.

European Heavyweight’s performance in Euro history:

There have never been more goals scored in a UEFA European Championship final than in Spain’s victory in 2012. They defeated Italy 4-0. In contrast, Germany has participated in a record six Eurofinals. The Soviet Union, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Portugal, Italy, Denmark, and the Netherlands are the other European heavyweights who have claimed the title.

The 2020 UEFA European Championship was unique in hosting perspective. The tournament occurred across 11 European cities rather than in the customary one or two host nations. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) took this action to commemorate the competition’s 60th anniversary. This is a one-time event because all of the games will once again be hosted by one nation (Germany in 2024 for Euro). In 1984, France became the final football team to win the UEFA European Championship in their own country.
