The 48th edition of the oldest football competition featuring national teams is scheduled in the United States of America. The men’s national teams of the nations that make up CONMEBOL, the continental governing body of the sport, compete in this 1916-established competition.
Eight champions from the CONMEBOL region have won the Copa America in more than a century of existence. Recall that since 1993, CONCACAF teams from North and Central America have competed in multiple editions, and other continents have also been invited in the past, albeit with less than stellar outcomes.
This tradition will be carried out in 2024 when teams from North and Central America compete in a tournament held in the United States. Beginning on June 20, some of the most well-known football players, including Lionel Messi, Vinicius Jr., Darwin Nunez, and Julian Alvarez, will compete in the tournament.
Argentina, the winners of the previous edition, will try to retain their crown and give their captain, Lionel Messi, a fitting sendoff as he likely plays in his final continental competition. Though other countries have also won the coveted trophy, Brazil and Argentina, longtime rivals, have dominated the Latin American championships over the years.
