Bundesliga Competition Format:

Each club plays the other club once at home and once away. Originally, a win was worth two points, while a draw was worth one and a loss was worth zero. Since the 1995-96 season, a win is worth three points, a draw is worth one point, and a loss is worth zero points. The club with the most points at the end of the season is crowned German champion. Currently, the top four clubs in the table automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage.

If teams are level on points, tie-breakers are applied in the following order:

  1. Goal difference for the entire season
  2. Total goals scored for the entire season
  3. Head-to-head results (total points)
  4. Head-to-head goals scored
  5. Head-to-head away goals scored
  6. Total away goals scored for the entire season

If two clubs remain tied after applying all of these tie-breakers, a single match is held at a neutral site to determine placement. However, this has never been required in the history of the Bundesliga.

Matchday squads must have a maximum of five non-EU representatives. Nine substitutes can be selected, five of which can be used throughout the game.
