Ravi Ashwin played his 100th test match against England in the 5th test match of the series at Dharamshala. He joined the elite list of players who played 100 test matches in their career. He made his debut on 6th November 2011 vs West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium. While playing the 100th test match on the home conditions, Ashwin’s test career has been very prominent. A few days ago, on the 3rd test match of this series, Ashwin took 500 wickets in test matches against England at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot. He became the 2nd Indian player and 9th bowler overall who achieved this feat in their test career.
Ashwin joined an elite list of Indians to play 100 Tests, following in the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar (200), Rahul Dravid (163), VVS Laxman (134), Anil Kumble (132), Kapil Dev (131), Sunil Gavaskar (125), Dilip Vengsarkar (116), Sourav Ganguly (113), Virat Kohli (113), Ishant Sharma (105), Harbhajan Singh (103) and Cheteshwar Pujara (103).
Ashwin’s Performance in Tests:
Ashwin has a tremendous test career with brilliant performance both with the bat and ball. He took 507 test wickets altogether with the ball and scored 3309 runs with the bat in his illustrious test career. His all-around performance includes 5 tons with a best score of 124. Also, he took 35 five-wicket hauls in his test career with a staggering average of 24 and a 51.38 strike rate.
In the 100-match test career, Ashwin played 60 test matches at home and 40 test matches in away venues. He took 354 wickets with the ball on the home ground with a mind-blowing 21.33 average and 27 five-wicket hauls. While in overseas matches, he took 153 wickets with an average of 29.9.
He also had 2 overseas 100s and scored 1485 runs while playing away from home. He played overall 23 test matches against England, 22 tests against Australia, 14 matches against South Africa, and 13 matches against West Indies. Among his overseas test matches, he played 10 matches in Australia, 7 matches each in England & South Africa, 6 matches each in Sri Lanka and WI, 3 matches in Bangladesh & 1 match in New Zealand.
The legendary off-spinner is the second Indian after the legend Anil Kumble to take 500 wickets in test matches. He is also the 3rd all-time great off-spinner in history to achieve this feat. In his test career, Ashwin took 8 10-wicket hauls with a decent economy of 2.8. His best bowling figure in a test match is 13/140.
Ashwin also became the first Indian to complete the double of 100 wickets and 1000-plus runs against England in Test cricket. He became the fourth player to achieve this feat, following in the footsteps of Gary Sobers, Monty Noble, and George Giffen. He went past Kumble to become India’s leading wicket-taker in home Tests, while also breaching the 350-wicket mark in Tests at home in the ongoing Test series.
